Ask Abby: How Can I Make Kale Taste Less Like Dirt?


Dear Abby,
How can I eat more kale when I think kale tastes like dirt?

Kale can definitely be an acquired taste but the health benefits are definitely worth keeping it in your diet.  Kale is very high in nutrients and very low in calories, making it one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet.  Kale is loaded with:

- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin K
- antioxidants which all help boost your immune system and protect against various cancers

I could go on and on about the health benefits but let’s get to the nitty gritty of helping kale not taste like dirt! 

I recommend that you slice your kale very finely.  I like to run my through the shredder of my food processor.  This will help break down it’s fibrous nature and make it more palatable. 

Another tip is to give it some LOVE.  Sprinkle it with sea salt, a dash of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon and you’re your hands into the kale and spend some time massaging it until the kale because bright green. You will find that the kale becomes tender and absorbs the flavors making it nice and tasty. 

One last tip, is to add a little sweetness to your salad to counteract any ‘dirt’ taste.  I like to add some fruit my kale salad, such as fresh antioxidant rich berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or blackberries.  Apple or mango chunks are also a nice addition to your salad and will brighten it up pop with flavor!
