As a Holistic Health Coach and Personal Trainer, January tends to be a BUSY month for me. Everyone is excited about making RESOLUTIONS and getting started on their health and wellness goals. Of course, I love this, but I find it funny that by the second week of January the classes that were once packed just a week ago are already petering out.
Good intentions can wane with the realization that it is going to take more than just one week of exercise and eating healthy to get into the best shape of your life.
Research has shown that 88% of people who make New Year's Resolutions fail.
When you make changes (even good ones) your cells change. You start to feel uncomfortable. The rebel in you comes out and you start to resist. Then you find that you are back to your old, safe (but not so healthy) ways. It’s just easier that way.
But! I have some GOOD NEWS:
That’s doesn’t include us. We are better than that. YOU are better than that.
Here are 3 tips to help you stick with your New Year's Resolutions:
1. Prioritize Your Self Care.
I work with so many people that put their needs lasts and cater to everyone else first. If this sounds like you, make 2016 about YOU. I promise this is not selfish. The better you take care of yourself, the better mother/daughter, father/son, wife/husband/partner you become. That positive energy flows from person to person and you will be amazed at how much more productive, happy, and healthy you will become.
2. Find Your Motivation
This is a big one. Dig deep and find your true motivation for your resolutions. We often make "should-based" goals meaning your heart is not in it and your motivation is low. This is why we see so many people at the gym the first few weeks of January but by the last few weeks the novelty has waned or you have given up. Remember slow and steady wins the race. Trying to overhaul your whole life in the first few days of the New Year is overwhelming. Take baby steps towards lasting change.
3. Create a Plan and Reach Out for Help
We often set goals without a plan or strategy to get there. "Winging it" does not always work and can set you up for failure which leads to feeling bad about yourself and in turn giving up on your goals. Sit down and be realistic with your goals and the amount of time it will take to accomplish. We all want to lose 10lbs in 10 days but honestly, that is not sustainable. If you are having trouble attaining your health and wellness goals reach out for help. There is no shame in needing accountability, especially with your health and wellness goals.
If you are willing to move through this, face the uncomfortable-ness, and form healthy long lasting habits, you will look and feel amazing, have more energy throughout the day, and live a happier and healthier life!
